Food Storage
In our church we have been advised for years to have a reserve of food. Store some food for emergencies...also have a 72 hour emergency kit. It's better to be prepared than without. I don't doubt the council. Each year I have this on my goal list. I have done it before. Stored up the basics. Only to let the food go to waste because I didn't rotate it or I put it some where and forgot about it. At my old house Wears Drive house we had a pantry. It was big enough to designate a few areas for storage, but here I have no place for extra food. I understand what to do, how to do it, but can't for the life of me bring myself to storing food every where. One lady I knew had food under her bed, closets, etc. I just can't do it. I feel cluttered enough as it is. I just can't imagine storing food under my bed. So it brings me to this problem... I need a solution. Where do I put food storage? We have a huge 21/2 car garage but I've heard you shouldn't keep it there because of the temperature changes. Is that true? We have huge storage spots of attic areas. They are full of junk that needs to be decluttered, but if they weren't full of junk could we store it there or it the same idea...temperature changes? I could sure use some advice in this area!

I most certainly don't know the answer, and have been weighed down by our lack of effort (bleck! is all I can say ;-) ... but this site is on my list of frequently visited blogs. These ladies are Food Storage Gurus ... if there is a question, they probably have an answer. In fact, when I went to get the link they latest post (Jan 11) is about storage options ... check them out.

Good luck with that! I need to get on the ball too. Could you change one of your closets (like linen or something) to a food storage closet? I remember doing that when we lived in TN and not knowing where to put food storage. Let me know what you figure out. I know--we can come visit TN and Kelly can build you a food storage room as a small addition to your house :)!
someone wants told me if we truly knew how the world was we would be using food storage as furniture. I know the importance of food storage but more importantly storing food that we actually eat. I'm not so into wheat etc, or the "old" food storage but I have learned to store things that we truly eat and miss. Ramen noodles, my kids love it, chef boy r dee! Oh yeah. but these things will store and they will eat it. I know that having wheat on hand is a necessity but what could is whole wheat if I don't have a wheat grinder? So, perhaps another thing to look for.
Most things can be kept in your garage. I wouldn't keep anything that is in boxes there but dried canned items not a problem. water, canned fruit, we store it there. and nothing has gone bad.
What would I put under the bed?? Im not sure, have you seen the dust bunnies under there? ick. I guess I would only put canned items. But, seriously how would I rotate food items under my bed? A cold storage or basement would be ideal. I'm thinking your attic or our woman/man cave would be a perfect spot. I think your garage would be just fine for a lot of your food storage needs. we have 4 empty 50 gallon water tanks waiting to be filled. Nice that we have them bad that they are empty.
